DESCRIPTION:Jonathan Karrant – 2026 Inductee Arkansas Jazz Hall of Fame\nBorn and raised in Fort Smith\, Arkansas\, Jonathan performed in concerts and events around his home state\, working with Deli Smith and The Don Bailey Quartet. Since then\, Jonathan has called New York\, California\, and Las Vegas home\, where he has enjoyed splendid success working in some of the finest jazz venues and performing arts centers. \nThe joyous home in which Jonathan grew up was filled with art\, music\, and dance. He spent a lot of time at his grandfather Bill and grandmother Goldia’s home where there was always much comedy and performance appreciation. His mother\, Nancy\, danced and taught for a local ballet company. She is an artist\, writer\, teacher\, and an avid music lover. As a college student in Memphis\, Tennessee\, she sang with a girl’s band in the 1960’s. Jonathan’s father\, John\, is a business man and a broker who has a passion for farming and gardening\, and owns a ranch just southwest of Fort Smith. While growing up\, Jonathan spent many hours helping on the farm\, enjoying the outdoors\, the livestock and wildlife. Jonathan’s sister\, Indra\, studied dance from an early age and later excelled as a dancer/ choreographer. \nHis mother says Jonathan began singing from the time he was born! One day when he was eight months old and swinging in his wind-up mechanical swing while listening to music with huge earphones on his little ears\, his mother noticed that his eyes were closed and he was turning his head from side to side in that recognizable musician’s horizontal nod. She gasped\, “A Musician!” To her\, that was a good thing\, and she was not at all surprised as time went on and he continued to show musical ability and love of music. \nJonathan sang for hours every day\, honing-in on his own type of music and style. When he was seven he began singing publicly. His first solo was at his church with Nancy Vernon\, musical director and organist\, directing and accompanying him. Then\, that summer in Eureka Springs\, he walked into a nightclub\, made his way to the stage\, and asked the band to accompany him while he sang “Stormy Monday”. The band agreed\, and he was a big hit with the audience\, as well as with the band. \nAs a teenager Jonathan was active in local theatre\, and studied music and theatre in middle and high schools. After graduating from high school\, director/writer/actor Meir Z. Ribalow recommended him for an intensive course of study at the William Esper Acting Studio in New York City. During this time he auditioned and was hired by the Metropolitan Opera House to play characters roles in performances\, one of them being the opera “Aida” starring Luciano Pavorotti. It was an extraordinary time for him\, working at the Met in major productions at Lincoln Center\, brushing shoulders on stage with great stars. \nJonathan began to take every opportunity to sing and perform at all kinds of events\, weddings\, celebrations\, at church\, in clubs and lounges\, wherever he was asked to perform. After performing as a soloist with the Don Bailey Jazz Concerts\, he was advised to strike-out to Las Vegas. Without ever having visited there\, he drove across country and jumped into the music scene\, singing in supper clubs and lounges and casinos. While there\, he had the opportunity to record with Vince Falcone\, noted music director and pianist. And\, in San Diego\, he began performing in some of the most respected venues of that city. He has traveled for performances across the states as well as in Europe. He continues to grow an adoring and loyal following of fans who appreciate his artistry. \nAudiences have characterized Jonathan as a great interpreter of song\, a storyteller\, a singer who brings music and lyric alive. Some refer to Jonathan as an amazing song-stylist who sings from the American songbook\, an entertainer of star quality. Others say he paints a picture\, he presents a mood and captivates a room through song. Jazz Corner said “Karrant’s voice is romantic without being cloying\, warm but not forced” and “that he sings standards with an emotional weight that make it seem as if he had written the songs himself”. He will tell you that he loves people\, loves connecting with other musicians and with his audience\, and loves sharing time with those who also love to celebrate life and music. \nJonathan’s album “On and On” hit to number four in the jazz charts. The album features such songs as “Don’t Let Me Be Lonely Tonight” and “Doodlin’”\, as well as the title track\, and was produced by Tyler Monks\, with pianist Josh Nelson\, bassist Rob Thorsen\, guitarist Mark Shapiro\, and drummer Duncan Moore. \nJonathan was honored in the 2014 New York City Jazz Cabaret Honors and\, in 2015\, he was voted “Best Singer” for the Bravo San Diego Awards. Also\, in 2015 Jonathan was asked to present two-time Grammy Award winner\, Diane Schuur\, with the proclamation of “Diane Schuur Day” in Palm Springs\, Ca. \nIn his popular single\, “Lady in Red”\, Jonathan truly shines. Backed by pianist Mikan Zlatkovich\, bassist Bob Magnusson and drummer Duncan Moore\, Karrant sets himself apart from other contemporaries on this single. Ultimately\, he displays a brilliance through phrasing and languid passages that linger. \nJonathan continues to return to Arkansas to perform for various events and charities\, including: The Arkansas Woman of the Year Gala\, Art Around the World (Fort Smith Regional Arts Museum); Reynolds Cancer House\, Crisis Intervention Center\, and with The Arkansas Symphony. The singer maintains a biannual residence at Fort Smith’s 906 Cocktail and Cigar Lounge\, where he presents his well anticipated and received Christmas Show. \nPermanently based in Las Vegas\, Jonathan has been a leading force for jazz\, contributing much to the arts and culture of the community. He is a preserver and innovator of mainstream jazz\, intent on keeping one of America’s original art forms thriving. \n

DESCRIPTION:Don Bailey\nMaster of multiple brass and wind instruments!\nDon Bailey has performed with The Temptations\, The Four Tops\, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra\, the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra\, Dizzy Gillespie\, Steve Allen\, Lucie Arnaz\, the New York Voices\, Tommy Newsom\, Marvin Hamlisch\, Phil Driscoll and other nationally acclaimed artists. He also has opened for Christian music artist Clay Cross and country music artist Randy Travis.\nDon Bailey is an Associate Professor of Music and the Director of Jazz Studies at the University of Arkansas in Fort Smith\, teaching since 1985. He helped develop the curriculum for a “Jazz Studies” concentration associated with the Bachelor of Arts in Music degree. Bailey teaches all of the core jazz courses\, including music theory.\nDon is active as a clinician and adjudicator throughout Arkansas and Oklahoma. He developed the first comprehensive summer Jazz Band Camp in Arkansas\, and he developed a Jazz Improv for Strings camp for orchestral strings—one of only a handful in the country. Both camps have grown under his direction and attract students from Arkansas\, Oklahoma and Texas.\nA native of New Jersey\, Bailey received his formative music education performing as a freelance musician in New York and his home state. He earned his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Iowa Wesleyan College (Mount Pleasant) and his Master of Arts in Music degree from the University of Northern Iowa (Cedar Falls)\, where he served as teaching assistant in Jazz Studies under Dr. Bob Washut.\nIn 2007\, Don received the annual (Fort Smith) “Mayor’s Honors to the Visual and Performing Arts.” He was included in Who’s Who in America for 2008 and in the 2009 edition of Who’s Who in the World\, and received the “Who’s Who Among America’s Teachers” award in 1998\, 2002\, 2004 and 2005. He also earned the “Excellence in Teaching Award” at Westark College (now UAFS) in 1987\, and the “National Teaching Excellence Award” from The University of Texas at Austin in 1989.\nDon has served two terms as president of the Arkansas Unit of the International Association for Jazz Education\, and has represented the state at regional and national jazz events. He also is on the teaching staff of the International Worship Institute in Dallas.\nHe is president and co-founder (with his wife\, Terri) of “New Song Music Company”\, through which they publish their original musical compositions. Together\, they have written numerous solos\, vocal choruses\, and background tracks for ensembles\, jazz band\, and vocal ensemble music\, as well as written and produced several background tracks of familiar hymns used for instrumental performances. Their latest and most extensive work is “Jazz Suite: A Retrospective.”\, a 12-movement jazz piece performed by the Fort Smith Symphony.

DESCRIPTION:Mark and the Groove Diggers are a variety band playing classic Rock\, Blues\, Country\, RnB\, and all points in between. \nBorn in 1964 and raised in the Fort Smith Arkansas area\, Mark was blessed with diverse musical surroundings. He was international finalist in the GIT scholarship competition sponsored by Fender Musical Instruments. He has shared the stage with greats such as the legendary B. B. King\, Phoebe Snow\, and Harp great\, Billy Blanks. Mark has worked other regional greats like Arkansas’ own Mr. Cabbage Head and the Screaming Radishes and Oklahoma’s Wanda Watson as her lead guitarist and backing vocalist. Mark’s skill’s have been utilized as staff guitarist for Ben Jack Recording Studio’s. Mark has long been considered to be a well rounded\, soulful player adding a distinct sound with his guitar to any band he plays with\, especially his own Mark Albertson Trio. His rich\, southern\, soulful blues vocals obviously pull from deep within his heart.Mark Albertson(Guitar/Vocals) \nSteve picked up a bass early in life after watching the bass players in his Mom’s bands. He has played around the region with most of the old “Garrison Avenue Crew” as well as road trip bar gigs\, festivals\, rallies\, and good old pasture parties in multiple states. Some of his bass work can be heard at Reverberation “bassplayersareyourfriend”. Steve found a home with The Groove Diggers and provides a wealth of factual information about most drummer’s behavior in their natural habitat \nJenks Smith began playing drums when he was 11 years old. He has played with many bands and his musical career\, but none that ever really did a whole lot. He drove the same van for 30 years\, and had some friends in college. He still enjoys playing the drums\, but the fourth said as always a killer.\nHe has played with many bands in his musical career\, but the fourth set is always a killer.\nHe still enjoys\, playing the drums\, and hopes you like it too.
